Winslow’s high-volume regional power grids are antiques just waiting to fail bigtime.
If you’ve been paying attention, you know this could easily be the worst winter in a long time. And I base that prediction on some very reliable indicators:
The harsh reality is: we’re just one major snowstorm away from major population centers throughout Arkansas with failing power grids.
All this means you want to leave no stone unturned in getting ready for this winter’s storms and power outages.
Every winter, bitter cold snaps, ice storms, and blizzards leave millions of people in Arkansas at risk of going days – sometimes weeks – without power or a back-up plan.
Most people aren’t fully prepared to weather a winter power outage in their home for more than a few hours. Any winter outage that lasts more than a day forces evacuations to urban shelters (not safe), hotels (expensive), or unaffected family and friends’ houses (inconvenient).
You should be prepared to shelter in place if there’s not any imminent danger to you and your family. It’s more convenient, more comfortable, and more cost effective.
Too often, people wait until a winter storm is bearing down on them to stock up on the items they’ll need. If you do that, there’s a high chance you’ll face a chaotic scene at your local stores and an even higher chance you’ll find those stores sold out of what you need.
Now is the time to prepare for winter power outages.
There’s a well-known PSA that you’ve probably heard at least once in your lifetime. Ahead of any major storm, it’ll tell you to stock up on enough food and water to last your family 7 days.
Well, unfortunately, just obeying the PSA will not be enough to ensure your family’s safety.
How long could your family survive if any one of these conditions were in play? How about all of them? Given our slow-to-react infrastructure, it’s a real possibility that these problems could last for weeks (even months) at a time.
In this hazardous winter storm season, it’s crucial to be prepared一but what does that mean, exactly?
It doesn’t mean just knowing where all the gaps in your preparations are. It means taking the time to fix them before a storm hits and turns them into emergencies..
For instance, when I made an honest evaluation of my preparedness in a winter storm situation, I found a MAJOR problem. (And this is coming from somebody who strives to be as self-reliant and prepared as possible.)
These were my findings . . .
If the storm was powerful enough to wipe out gas, transportation and power supply chains, my family would have absolutely NO long-term access to power.
And after extensively looking into all the available backup generator options, I realized that this was an unsolved problem for everybody, not just me. Throughout all my testing, I kept coming to these same conclusions . . .
It never needs gas is tougher than a Texas tick...
All-in-all the project cost me well over $1 million.
